The Scimitar-Horned Oryx (Oryx Dammah) is Native to Northern Africa, but is now believed to be extinct in the wild.  The Scimitar Horned Oryx was introduced to breeding programs in the 1960's, and in 1996, there were approximately 2,200 Scimitar-Horned Oryx found on Ranches in the Hill Country (Kerrville, San Antonio, Junction) region of Texas.

The horns on the Scimitar Horned Oryx found on Texas ranches are the biggest in the world, providing for the ultimate trophies and hunting records.  Horn Lengths often exceed 38 inches with good Trophies in the 38-46 inch ranges.  A Male Scimitar Oryx typically weighs 300 to 470 lbs and the females 200-300 lbs.

The Scimitar Horned Oryx are white with a chestnut neck and chest in color, and their face and leg markings cocoa to beige.  The Scimitar Horned Oryx calves are born orange and tan.  All Scimitar Horned Oryx grow long, ringed horns that tilt backwards, sometimes diverging very widely.

Scimitar Oryx band together with other types of Oryx and frequently hybridize producing fertile hybrids.  Hybrids with Addax resemble Addax, and 2nd generation hybrids with Arabian Oryx resemble Arabian Oryx.  The Scimbok is also a common Hybrid with a Gemsbok Oryx.

The Scimitar Horned Oryx males reach sexual maturity at age 18 months; females at 2 years.  The gestation period for Horned Oryx is 8 to 8 1/2 months and they typically give birth to 1 offspring at a time.  The breeding season is all year.
