The Common Eland

The Eland (Taurotragus oryx), also known as the Southern Eland or Common Eland, is an Antelope native to South Africa which can now be hunted in Texas with Texas Hunt Lodge. The Eland Antelope is a large antelope (males average 1,100 lbs and females 700lbs) with smooth horns that twist near the base. The horns are found in both males and femails and average in 24 inches in length, with a maximum of 43 1/2 inches.

The Eland diet consists of mostly grass, and they flourish in the Texas Hill Country environment. The Eland are gregarious and very gentle for a wild animal. They tend to breed year-round in the United States and their Gestation Period is 8 1/2 months.

The Eland antelope male reach sexual maturity at 18 months and the female at 15 - 24 months depending on how well nurished they are.
